I.A. Stewart What do we get out of prep sports?

I've been covering prep football this season for the Sentinel, and I'm pretty sure that by now I've gotten pretty used to watching for certain things during the course of a game.

I know that certain statistics tend to predict the outcome of the game -- as in who wins and who loses. I watch which quarterback can throw an out-route with some speed on the ball, which offensive line is able to dominate the line of scrimmage, which defense is tackling th

I.A. Stewart NFL coach stops by Monterey Bay League

Friday night at Watsonville, I was waiting for the varsity football game to start. A man walked by me, on to the Monterey Toreadores' sideline. I thought I recognized him, but wasn't sure. That's when somebody yelled out, 'Hey, it's Tony Dungy!'

It wasn't Dungy, but it was an NFL coach - Herman Edwards, of the Kansas City Chiefs. Edwards, who has played football at half the schools in California - Monterey High, Monterey Penninsula College, UC Berkeley, MPC again, Cal again, and San Di…

I.A. Stewart Suprise high school football team of the year

And the winner is...

Pajaro Valley. The Grizzlies. The formerly 1-9 Monterey Bay League doormats.

They have the best record in the county, even though they've played some pretty bad opponenets. But that's not really what makes them so surprising; its the one loss.

P.V. was beaten 28-7 on Saturday by Seaside High, last year's MBL champion. The Grizzlies played them tough, though, and the three touchdown deficit doesn't really tell the whole story. The team was vastly under…

This is a race report to my team, the Bicycle Trip racing team here in Santa Cruz.
Copperoplois is a very small town at the base of the Sierra's off Highway 4 toward Angels Camp. One lap consists of 22 miles of very bumpy, rough and hilly roads with a thousand foot climb and endless stretches of long, straight and exposed windswept sections. You either love it or you hate it. I have raced Copperopolis seven times since 1995, finishing second in 1999.
Copperopolis Road…
